There is probably not an office or home left in Ireland that does not use Microsoft Office on a regular basis, no matter the industry or area of expertise. It has become synonymous with our working lives, and almost as much in our home computing as well. Whether it is sending important emails in Outlook, working on an extremely important Excel spreadsheet or using PowerPoint for a school presentation, MS Office is everywhere. That even goes for the diehard Mac users who struggle to get by without the day to day convenience of Word and Excel!
Now Microsoft has released Office 2016, which adds a ton of incredibly helpful new tricks and features to Office 365, which was already one of the most incredible business productivity features Microsoft has ever championed. These latest additions to Office 2016 are designed purely and simply to make life easier, and considering the regularity that most people use Office this can only be a good thing.
Microsoft Office 365 already enables people to do business anywhere, and massively increases productivity through the cloud. This latest round of features goes a bit further and adds a bit more to the mix, helping to even further increase productivity online by improving collaboration through every type of device which connects to the internet.
We have put together a list of some of our favourite features from the new and improved Office 2016.
Co-authoring and Real time Collaboration
One of the biggest additions in Office 2016 is real-time co-authoring in Word and PowerPoint. For the first time you can now work on the same document at precisely the same time as a number of your colleagues, regardless of what device you are using. As you collaborate with others in a document, you can see where they are working and view their edits as they happen. Co-authoring is available for documents shared on OneDrive, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online. All of the changes are stored centrally and you can view and edit the version history of everyone who has worked on the document.
This enables you to see who has access to a given document, and who is currently working on it, and also enables you to change individual authoring permissions for any document that you own. All you need to do is click the Share button in the Ribbon for easy sharing right from your Office documents.
You can use Skype for Business to check in and collaborate with someone using Instant Messaging (IM), voice, video, or screen sharing. You can also join online meetings while on the go using the Skype for Business mobile app. See who is online, IM meeting participants, and follow along when a presenter shares their screen – all from your tablet or phone. Connecting with your colleagues has never been easier, and being based in different locations is no longer a complete barrier to effective communication, and modern meetings are always available.
Improved Version history
Greatly improved version history allows you to refer back to previous snapshots and earlier drafts of documents during the editing process as you collaborate with others, making it much easier to take ownership and share the right documents at the right time.
Office is Accessible on all Devices
In addition to access from your PC and laptop, Office 2016 is now truly mobile, with access available across Windows, Android and Apple devices. This makes it easy for you to review, edit, and share content across all device types while you are on the go.
The Clutter feature is intuitive and learns exactly how you prioritise your email and then helps you by putting low priority messages in a separate folder (while still giving you a daily summary so you don’t miss anything). When on the go, you can also take advantage of this capability by using the Focused Inbox.
Fact-check or explore terms in your documents with Bing-powered Smart Lookup. Simply highlight terms in your document and use this feature to bring in search results from the web right into your reading or authoring environment.
