World Wide Web helps adults log onto God Talk
Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, has launched its first accredited online theology course to enable people who are unable to travel to the college on a regular basis to study at home or wherever they have access to a computer and the internet. A recent pilot study undertaken by NOSTRA highlighted the need to overcome the isolation felt by some people when they engage online learning. Following these findings NOSTRA developed ‘blended modules’ whereby the online participants meet on two occasions during the course to enhance their learning.
Five modules are available and each module can cater for up to 20 students.

Each module costs €250 and carries six credits towards the 30 credits required to gain a Certificate in Theology and Religious Studies. There is no time limit to completing the Certificate and no formal qualifications are required to undertake the course. Once you register you are required to log in at a fixed time every week for tutorial work. You are also required to log in every day to interact with course material and other course participants. Participants are required to attend a number of tutorials with lecturers and tutors from Mary Immaculate College.
The NOSTRA programme at Mary Immaculate College’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies first started in 2005 to enable adult learners to work towards an accredited, certified course of study in a manner that is flexible and adaptable to their lifestyle. A range of modules, all carrying credits towards a Certificate in Theology and Religious Studies are offered in satellite centres across Munster. We’re delighted to collaborate with the University of Notre Dame’s STEP Programme to deliver this online course. STEP is a part of Notre Dame’s Institute for Church Life and has pioneered the use of online learning to deliver a range of Theology courses up to post-graduate level. That expertise is now being made available to us here in Limerick and will benefit those adults who choose to study in this way.
